Dear Day Families,

The school year is well underway and we have enjoyed seeing many of you at our recent PTO events, including the "New Parent Coffee," "Back-to-School Picnic," and our first PTO Meeting of the school year which featured an opportunity to meet and get to know Principal Gina Healy and Assistant Principal Michael Harding.

We are currently holding our "Day Directory Dragon Cover Contest," and coming up in October will be the "6th Grade Fall Harvest Social" and the annual Magazine Drive.  See below for more information on these events.

Our annual dues drive is also underway.  Please consider contributing to the PTO.  The funds raised support important programs at F.A. Day including teacher grants, creative arts assemblies, and advancements in classroom technology.  Any donation is appreciated and will count towards an ice cream party for your child's team!  See below for more details.

Visit our website www.daypto.org  to keep up-to-date on what's happening with the PTO throughout the year.

6th Grade Fall Harvest Social

This year the Day PTO will be hosting a Fall Harvest Social for 6th graders and their parents (no siblings please).  The event will be held on Wednesday, October 22nd from 7-9pm in the Day gymnasium.  Please join us for cider, coffee, caramel  apples and other desserts.

We are in the process of organizing the event and are looking for volunteers to help with set-up, clean-up, food service and running games during the party.  Additionally, we are hoping to have families volunteer to bring desserts or cider to the event.

Please contact one of the event co-chairs if you are able to volunteer:  Sue Amatucci at suemarieamatucci@yahoo.com  or Darlene Sheehan at cohensheehan@comcast.net .

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Magazine Drive

Announcing the Seventh Annual Day Magazine Fundraiser!

Please be sure and participate with these easy-to-follow instructions.

On October 21, your child will bring home a booklet with coupons. Please make sure your child completes the coupons according to the example page.

Be sure your child returns the booklet to the school cafeteria between 7:30 - 8:00 AM on October 22 or 23.  No booklets will be accepted after this.

There will be prizes and bonus awards for the kids.  Two students (one boy and one girl) who return the neatest booklet will each win a $50.00 cash award.

Subsription Renewals can also count toward raising funds for Day if done through the QSP website. Visit www.QSP.com  and use account number 425024646 to select your purchases and Day Middle School will get 40% of all subscriptions. This is a great way to support Day year round.

Subscriptions to magazines make great gifts for the upcoming holidays. Please consider giving Day Middle School your participation for this important fundraiser!

8 parent volunteers are needed to help collect coupon books on the morning of Oct. 22 and Oct. 23 from 7:15-8:05 AM.

Volunteer

Please consider volunteering for the PTO.  There are many ways to get involved.

Committee chair openings still exist for our annual Auction, Creative Arts and Sciences, the School Council, PAC Representative, and 8th Grade Activities.  There are also many other volunteer opportunities.

School Council

We invite you to apply to serve on the Day School Council.  The Day School Council members have the opportunity to serve in an advisory capacity to the Principal.

We are looking for three new parent representatives to the School Council for the 2008-2009 school year.  The council meets once a month on Wednesday, alternating between afternoon and evenings.

In past years members of the School Council have worked on a number of interesting issues such as: Home-School Communications, Signage Around The Building, Technology Grants and the School Improvement Plan.

If you are interested please submit an application.

Community News

Dangerous Intersection

The Horace Mann Elementary School community has contacted Day to alert us to a dangerous pedestrian crossing at the intersection of North and Crafts Streets.  Horace Mann has contacted the city regarding two major problems that endanger pedestrians: 1) Cars frequently run the red light at high speeds, even when the crossing guard is in the middle of the crosswalk; and 2) Even when cars are going the legal speed limit through a yellow light, they can't clear the crosswalk before the pedestrian crossing signal goes on because there's not  enough of a delay between the red light and the crossing signal.  Horace Mann has asked the city to delay the walk light for a few extra  seconds so the cars can clear the intersection.  The town's traffic engineer says he needs evidence that a problem actually exists. If you agree that a problem exists at this intersection, please contact Traffic engineer Clint Schuckel at cschuckel@newtonma.gov .  For more information on Horace Mann's efforts, please contact Marcia Tabenken, Horace Mann PTO Co-President, at 617-965-7322.

FY09 Systemwide Goals
The School Committee will be voting on the FY09 Systemwide Goals on October 14.  There will be time set aside for public comment and discussion with School Committee members from 7:30 until 8:00 PM. To view the draft goals for FY09 click here.

The Board of Aldermen will be meeting on Wednesday night, Oct. 1, to discuss what to do with the $11 million in free cash that the city has.  There may be between $500,000 to $750,000 that can be taken out of the free cash account and used for this fiscal year.

If you would like to add your voice in the discussion, you can send an email to all the Aldermen by emailing David Olson, City Clerk, at dolson@newtonma.gov.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Barrow, Benita Danzing, Marion Golin
