F.A. Day PTO 2017-2018 Committees/Chairs
Looking to work with other Day parents to make our school great? Read below to see where help is needed and then submit an inquiry here to learn more.
Co-Presidents: Veronika Lubbe-Lynch, Andrea Steenstrup & Nina Tebaldi
The PTO Co-Presidents plan, budget, and manage the PTO calendar of events for the year including fundraising events, community events, and educational programs. We work with the event committee chairs offering support and guidance where needed. Together with the Day school principal, we plan agendas for regular principal-parent meetings that include 3-4 morning coffees and 3-4 evening meetings throughout the year. Additionally, we work with the principal to determine fundraising needs which help support the teachers and the school. We attend monthly PTO council meetings and communicate school and PTO events via email and by posting information regularly on the PTO Web site.
Treasurer: April Stein
The Treasurer keeps the financial records of the PTO and is responsible for the PTO's financial activities, including collecting all money received by the PTO, paying bills, financial reporting and filing appropriate government forms.
Elementary School Liaisons: Felicia Falchuk & Jaye Schneider (Burr), Jennifer Conley (Horace Mann), YOUR NAME HERE! (Cabot, Franklin, Peirce)
The liaisons will support PTO chair people by helping to identify volunteers from the various elementary school communities to assist with PTO programming and events. We are currently seeking liaisons from each of our "feeder" elementary schools: Burr, Cabot, Franklin, Horace Mann, and Peirce.
Creative Arts & Sciences: April Stein
Creative Arts & Sciences is a curriculum-based program which brings outside presenters/programs into all grades at Day Middle School. Programs enrich learning in Science, Art, English, Language Arts, History, Social Sciences, and Music. Creative Arts & Sciences is entirely funded by the PTO. Committee volunteers welcome presenters, assist with set up (if necessary), and attend the presentations.
Grade 6 Fall Social: Sarah Arcese & Claudia Wolf
A community building party to welcome the new 6th graders to Day Middle School. This is a fun evening of music and games led by a professional DJ. The event is held in the Day gymnasium and includes pizza, snacks, and desserts. Parents help with organizing the food, entertainment, set-up, and publicity. The event is limited to 6th graders and parents only.
8th Grade “Moving On Ceremony”: April Stein & YOUR NAME HERE
Coordinates volunteer signup and oversight of 8th grade parents in providing refreshments and ushering at the 8th Grade Moving On ceremony held in the gymnasium on the last day of school. In past years, parents have also put together a slide show of the graduates--this is a possible piece of the ceremony, as well. (Those who volunteer on this committee enjoy the benefit of excellent seats for the ceremony!)
Directory, Website, and Constant Contact: Cecelia Kwartler
The team working behind the scenes to keep our web presence and communications running smoothly. This work can be done in off-hours, remotely, in one's pajamas.
Teacher Appreciation Breakfast: James Fann
Coordinates breakfast for teachers and staff in early March. Duties include taking inventory of supplies in PTO supply closet, set up, clean up and coordinating contributions from parents.
Teacher Appreciation Lunch: Jen Hyde (fall) Marie-Jo Dumoulin (spring)
This is a great way to meet the teachers! Coordinate lunch for teachers and staff (only twice a year). Duties include taking inventory of supplies in PTO supply closet, set up, ordering and lunch for about 100 people and clean up. Some coordination of parent contributions. Easy and fun.
Parent's Night Out: Kate Ploussios
Creates and coordinates activities and opportunities for parents to get out and get to know each other. Events are held periodically throughout the school year.
Progressive Dinner: Alyce Kuklinski, Viv Liu-Somers, & Sudha Maheshwari
Day’s primary fundraising and adult community building event, typically held on a Saturday evening in late January. Plan pre and post parties with small group dinners at multiple houses of Day families. Co-chair duties includes host recruiting, publicity, coordination of food/drinks and raffle. Volunteers help with coordination of food/drinks, raffle donations, set-up and clean-up.
Faculty Foul-Ups: Ted Vahey & Brian Lynch
Teachers and staff members participate in a free-throw shootout to the cheers of the students. A fun, community-building tradition at Day. Volunteers are also needed to sell prediction sheets to students at lunch in the cafeteria.
Annual Fund Drive Coordinators: Andrea Steenstrup
This role is responsible for organizing Day's Annual Fund drive, which raises funds to support curriculum and technology needs at Day. While this is Day's primary fundraiser, the job is quite manageable and can be done almost entirely from home: draft the appeal letter, coordinate mailings and responses, and draft reminder emails. The coordinator will be assisted by one additional volunteer. Be a school volunteer hero with a low time commitment!
NewtonServes Coordinator: YOUR NAME HERE
Coordinate Day's NewtonServes event, typically held the Sunday after the last Sunday of April school vacation week. Work with Principal to get teacher input on feasible projects. Work with PTO to publicize the event and get volunteers. In the past few years we have enjoyed the assistance from a large group of volunteers from the Chinese school that meets at Day on Sundays. Projects completed during prior NewtonServes days include outdoor cleanup and specific indoor tasks such as painting classrooms, hallways, and stairwells and small carpentry projects.
Night Out at the Rex Sox Coordinator: Vicky Gifford
Coordinate a Day family outing to a spring Red Sox game. Secure a block of tickets, publicize event, and coordinate ticket sales. This is a wonderful community-building event and everyone loves the Red Sox!
